Manage Money Wales: From Pop-Up to Community Lifeline

Manage Money Wales (MMW) was founded in 2015 to help people across Wales gain the knowledge and confidence to manage their money. What began as a small pop-up service has grown into a trusted Community Sharing Hub in Porth, supporting people through financial education, practical help and meaningful social connection. Alongside money management support, the hub plays a vital role in tackling poverty, loneliness and isolation, while promoting reuse and sustainability.

A Place for Support, Connection and Sustainability

At the heart of the hub is the Community Sharing Shop, where donated clothing, food and household items are redistributed directly back into the local community. Over the past two years, the shop has welcomed more than 25,000 visits, diverted 63,000kg of waste from landfill, and become a welcoming space where people can spend time, build friendships and access support without financial pressure. Many people visit regularly, spending several hours at the hub each week because it feels safe, friendly and inclusive.

“There is no other place in Wales like the Community Sharing Shop. I travel from Cwmbran and catch three buses, which takes two and a half hours, just to get there!”

Powered by Volunteers

Volunteers are central to everything MMW does. Supported by 75 volunteers, who have contributed over 6,000 hours, the hub delivers activities such as bingo, crafts, wellbeing walks and one-to-one money management support, including help with debt and benefits forms. Volunteers are matched to roles that reflect their skills and interests, helping them feel valued while strengthening the organisation. Many volunteers are new to the UK and use their time at the hub to build confidence, improve language skills and feel part of the local community.

Working in Partnership

MMW works closely with a wide range of local partners including Grow Rhondda, Play It Again Sport, Re:Make Valleys Benthyg and local schools. These partnerships help extend the reach of the hub, promote reuse and sustainability, and provide opportunities for wellbeing activities and learning around climate action.

Support from Interlink

Support from Interlink has been central to Manage Money Wales’ journey. From early guidance on becoming a CIC, to funding, training, leadership support and valuable networking opportunities, Interlink has helped MMW grow and adapt over time.

“Interlink has been like a parent you can go to for advice.”

Looking Ahead

Manage Money Wales is seeking longer-term funding to continue developing the Community Sharing Hub in response to what the community wants and needs. They also hope to support other areas across South East Wales to set up similar projects, sharing their learning and experience to help more communities thrive.
