Celebrating the Work of the Older Persons Advisory Group (OPAG) in RCT

The Rhondda Cynon Taf Older Persons Advisory Group (OPAG) has published its 2025 Annual Report, highlighting the vital work of the group and the five Fifty+ Forums across the county: Llantrisant & District, Rhondda, Taff Ely, Upper Rhondda, and Cynon Valley. OPAG continues its mission: “To enable older people to live longer and better lives.”

Throughout 2025, OPAG and the Forums delivered a wide range of events, activities, and initiatives aimed at promoting wellbeing, preventing social isolation, and providing older residents with opportunities to engage, learn and enjoy their communities. A notable highlight was the International Day of Older People celebration in October, held at Cynon Linc, which featured guest speakers including the Older Persons Commissioner for Wales, Rhian Bowen-Davies, and senior representatives from Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council. Members also enjoyed entertainment, refreshments and the chance to connect socially.

The forums hosted regular meetings and social sessions, welcoming expert speakers on topics ranging from health and safety, dementia awareness, scams, and legal matters, to creative and cultural activities such as African drumming and poetry. Special initiatives, such as the “Warm and Hospitable Mondays” sessions and armchair yoga, helped combat loneliness and support physical and mental wellbeing. The forums also organised trips to local and regional attractions, including Aberdare Recycling Centre, Porthcawl, Carmarthen, and Bute Park in Cardiff, giving members opportunities to socialise and enjoy memorable experiences.

OPAG members actively contributed to consultations, attended meetings with local partners, and represented older people’s interests in regional and national forums, including the Cymru Older People’s Alliance (COPA). Through these activities, OPAG has ensured that the voices of older residents in RCT are heard in shaping policies and services that affect their lives.

Financially, the group successfully secured funding from Welsh Government and local grants to support its events, wellbeing programmes, and community initiatives, demonstrating careful stewardship and transparency.

Looking ahead to 2026, OPAG’s Development Plan prioritises increasing forum membership, strengthening partnerships with local agencies and promoting the contributions and talents of older people. The group remains committed to ensuring that people over 50 in Rhondda Cynon Taf can lead active, connected and fulfilling lives.
