Volunteers’ Week Spotlight: Catrin’s Story

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible individuals who give their time to support others and strengthen communities. This spotlight is on a volunteer from Citizens Advice Rhondda Cynon Taf, a charity providing free, independent, confidential, and impartial advice to help improve people’s lives. Through their support and campaigning work, they help people across Rhondda Cynon Taf access the guidance, information and support they need.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I studied English and Law at university and moved back home to South Wales after graduating to look for work.

How did you get involved?

After struggling to find work in the first few months out of university I was keen to get out of the house and contribute in some way to the community. A friend suggested that I should look at volunteering for Citizens Advice.

What difference has volunteering made to you?

I’ve really enjoyed volunteering as a generalist adviser. This role has given me a wide range of experience through advising clients and working in an office environment, both of which I believe have improved my chances of finding paid employment.

What difference has volunteering made to your organisation?

Citizens Advice provides such a wide range of support to the community. I hope I’ve been able to contribute to that support in a meaningful way through my role.

What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?

Volunteering as an adviser has been a very fulfilling role ayou’re able to take on responsibility quite early on. This means it is a great opportunity to gain experience and contribute to the local community.

What 3 words would you use to describe volunteering:

Fulfilling, experience and community!
