Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a 63-year-old single man with a passion for working in the community. I have recently been diagnosed with a medical condition that has resulted in me being made redundant from my job. I live alone and at the moment am trying hard to rebuild my life and social connections.
How did you get involved?
I was looking for an opportunity to connect with an organisation and meet new people to give my life purpose and meaning. I was fortunate enough to meet a well known musical arranger and composer.
What difference has volunteering made to you?
Volunteering has given me the opportunity to contribute to my local community and reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.
What difference has volunteering made to your organisation?
Although we haven’t yet performed our first festival, we hope that the local community will enjoy the music, encourage participation and develop the community spirit.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
If you have an interest in local community matters, then volunteering is a great way to make things happen. Your experience and skill sets are valued commodities that can bring joy and appreciation. There is always a need for motivated people to make life better for less fortunate people.
What 3 words would you use to describe volunteering:
Impact, purpose and pride!
