Volunteers’ Week Spotlight: Kirsty’s Story
Written by amber | Published on 01st June 2026
This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible individuals who give their time to support others and strengthen communities. This spotlight is on a volunteer from Role Play Lane, a not-for-profit role play centre and community hub supporting children and families through play-based learning that promotes confidence, education and wellbeing. Through inclusive and supportive sessions, Role Play Lane helps families feel connected, welcomed and supported through the power of play.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a single mother to a 6 year old boy. I hadn’t worked for 5 years before volunteering at Role Play Lane, but I was introduced through Suzanne at Work and Skills, RCTCBC. I then started volunteering in October and that recently led to paid working hours at Role Play Lane.
How did you get involved?
I volunteered to gain professional skills and to socialise more.
What difference has volunteering made to you?
It’s made a big difference. I’m far more confident now, with a wider skill set and more work experience. It’s made a big difference to me and has been noticed by co-workers, too.
What difference has volunteering made to your organisation?
The Volunteer Coordinators at RPL said: “Kirsty works extremely hard. She’s very dedicated and committed and is our biggest cheerleader. She has become the creative organiser and a friend”.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
Step out of your comfort zone. It’s fun. The support received is second to none; I have never felt more supported.
What 3 words would you use to describe volunteering:
Fun, rewarding and empowering!
