Volunteers’ Week Spotlight: Lynne’s Story
Written by amber | Published on 01st June 2026
This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible individuals who give their time to support others and strengthen communities. This spotlight is on a volunteer from Cwm Taf People First, an organisation run by and for adults with learning disabilities. Supporting people across Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Torfaen, they help individuals have voice, choice, and control over their own lives while building more inclusive and empowered communities.
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Lynne Evans. I first became involved with Cwm Taf People First over 36 years ago, when I helped set up the organisation. I have been volunteering ever since and remain actively involved today, continuing to champion the rights of people with a learning disability.
How did you get involved?
I was tired of being at the day centre and felt frustrated about not having enough control over my own life. I wanted to make sure I had a voice, and that other people with disabilities also had the opportunity to have a say over their own lives. This is what led me to help set up Cwm Taf People First.
What difference has volunteering made to you?
Volunteering has helped me grow in confidence and come out of my shell. I now understand my rights much more clearly and I use what I have learned to help others understand their rights too.
What difference has volunteering made to your organisation?
Through my volunteering, I believe I have helped make a difference in our local community.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
What 3 words would you use to describe volunteering:
Meet new people and good for mental health!
