This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible people who give their time to support stronger, more connected communities. This spotlight is on a volunteer from Comfort and Hope Bereavement Support, a community organisation offering listening, comfort and guidance to those experiencing loss. Through compassion and care, they help people feel supported as they navigate grief and begin to find hope again.

Tell us a bit about yourself
I enjoy researching my family tree and spend a lot of my spare time doing this. I also enjoy reading and volunteering.
How did you get involved?
I initially came through the service as a client after losing my mam. Phoebe recognised how I reacted with other members of the support group and thought I built a good connection with others during the group. I had a real good sense of understanding and a real listening ear, so they asked me to volunteer with the organisation.
What difference has volunteering made to you?
Volunteering doesn’t allow me any time to get bored, there’s always something to do and it gives me the chance to chat with others. It has given me routine after my working life came to a close.
What difference has volunteering made to your organisation?
I feel I have brought organisational skills to the table, like scheduling appointments, which was not in place prior.
What would you say to encourage others to volunteer?
Please do it! There is always a need for volunteers and there are loads of organisations out there crying out for volunteers! You would not understand the impact you could have and the appreciation from those you help!
What 3 words would you use to describe volunteering:
Enjoyable, worthwhile and happy place!
